Nubya Garcia – ‘SOURCE’ (2020) review

  • by

Nubya Garcia is one of the leading lights of the current London jazz scene, and her debut album, SOURCE, is an impressive statement of her talents as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader.

The album is full of vibrant, inventive, and often joyous music, all of it written by Garcia. She is accompanied by a stellar cast of young London-based jazz musicians, including trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, bassist Daniel Casimir, and drummer Femi Koleoso. Garcia’s sax solos are often the highlight of the album, but the whole band is tight and in sync. They work together to create a sound that is both modern and rooted in the jazz tradition.

SOURCE is an album full of energy and invention, and it is sure to cement Garcia’s place as one of the most exciting young jazz musicians of her generation.
