  • by

Ah Um is a stunning masterpiece of jazz and a defining moment of Charles Mingus’ career. Here, Mingus brings together a stellar lineup of musicians, including saxophonist John Handy, drummer Dannie Richmond, and trumpeter Booker Ervin, to create an album that is as complex and innovative as it is beautiful.

The album opens with the classic “Better Git It in Your Soul,” a driving hard bop number that gets the album off to a fiery start. From there, Mingus takes us through a series of his compositions, ranging from the upbeat swing of “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” to the delicate balladry of “Self-Portrait in Three Colors.” Throughout the album, Mingus and his bandmates show a remarkable level of cohesion and chemistry, creating a unique sound that perfectly captures the spirit of the time.

Ah Um is an essential listen for any jazz fan, and a perfect example of Mingus’ genius.
