Kamasi Washington’s ‘The Epic’ is a masterwork of modern jazz, full of creative and ambitious compositions. The album is a three-disc set, each of them focusing on a different aspect of his sound.
Disc one, ‘The Planets’, is a suite of nine compositions, each one inspired by a different planet, blending elements of jazz, classical, and funk. Disc two, ‘The Epic’, is a single-track, hour-long suite featuring a full band, a string orchestra, and a choir. It’s a prime example of Washington’s ability to compose and arrange for large ensembles. Disc three, ‘The Message’, contains seven more compositions, this time with a smaller band, including guest appearances from Thundercat, Terrace Martin, and Ronald Bruner Jr.
‘The Epic’ is a beautiful and powerful statement, a testament to Washington’s skill as a composer, arranger, and bandleader, and a must-have for any fan of modern jazz.
