Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto – ‘Getz/Gilberto’ (1964) review

  • by

This 1964 collaboration between Stan Getz and João Gilberto is a classic of bossa nova – for many the album that defines the genre. It also happens to be one of the best-selling of jazz albums in general.

Getz’s mellow tenor saxophone is the perfect foil for Gilberto’s lilting vocals, and the two musicians are supported by the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Tom Jobim. The album features a selection of bossa nova classics, such as “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Desafinado,” as well as original compositions like “Corcovado” and Jobim’s “Doralice.”

Getz/Gilberto is a perfect example of the joyous and sophisticated music that Brazilian jazz has to offer.
