Thelonious Monk – ‘Monk’s Dream’ (1963) review

  • by

Monk’s Dream is a classic album that still stands the test of time. It features some of the jazz legend’s best compositions, including the title track and the classic ‘Blue Monk’. The album features a tight, energetic trio, featuring Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, and John Ore on bass.

On this album, Monk’s distinctively angular playing is at its best, and the band is in perfect sync with each other. The album covers a wide range of styles and moods, from the slow, contemplative ‘Monk’s Dream’ to the frenetic ‘Bye-Ya’. In addition, the album features some of Monk’s best ballad playing, particularly on the tender ‘Body and Soul’

This is an essential album for any jazz fan, and it’s a great way to get to know the music of Thelonious Monk.
