John Coltrane – ‘Blue Train’ (1958) review

  • by

John Coltrane’s Blue Train is one of the most important recordings in jazz history. It is a landmark of the hard bop genre, an album that both defined and expanded the boundaries of jazz.

The album features Coltrane’s signature tenor saxophone style, combined with the inspired playing of the rest of the band, including Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

The album is composed of seven Coltrane originals, including the title track, which is one of his most beloved melodies. Every track is a masterpiece of improvisation and composition, from the soulful ballad “Lazy Bird” to the hard-driving “Moment’s Notice”.

Blue Train is an essential part of any jazz collection, and a must-listen for anyone interested in Coltrane’s music.
